MMGI BRAND Billboard Philippines

MMGI BRAND Billboard Philippines

Connecting Filipino Music and the World

From its first issue in 1890, Billboard evolved into the definitive authority in global music. From its iconic charts to its influence on cultural discourse, the brand holds a central place where artistry, fandom, and industry converge. As it expanded its global footprint—with editions in China, Japan, Argentina, Vietnam, Italy, and Georgia—it welcomed the Philippines as its seventh edition in October 2023.

Launched under Modern Media Group Inc. through a licensing agreement with Penske Media Corporation, Billboard Philippines marked a turning point in the nation’s music media landscape. It addressed a longstanding gap by creating a platform devoted to amplifying Original Pilipino Music (OPM) and capturing the country’s rich and evolving sound.

At its helm, Billboard Philippines assembled a pioneering editorial team. Editor-in-Chief Bret Jackson brought a blend of editorial insight and cultural fluency, shaping a vision rooted in authenticity and reach. Francis Reyes, Editor-at-Large, lent the weight of legacy and experience, bridging generations of Filipino music. Paolo Valenciano, as Executive Producer, defined the brand’s live and audiovisual direction with cinematic precision. Podcast Producer Anton Molina extended the narrative into sound, crafting immersive audio journeys that deepened the brand’s connection with its audience.

From the outset, the editorial approach championed diversity in sound—spotlighting the storytelling of Pinoy folk-pop, the energy of novelty tracks, the edge of Filipino rock, and the pulse of urban OPM. Billboard Philippines reflected this musical landscape while actively shaping it across print, digital, live events, collaborations, and podcasts.

The brand’s debut issue, released on October 15, 2023, made an immediate impact. Featuring dual covers with SB19—crowned the kings of P-pop—and Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, Asia’s Songbird, the issue captured the spirit of OPM’s past and future. It sold out swiftly, with high demand for a collector’s box set featuring individual member covers of SB19, alongside a special “Pop Issue” edition that reinforced the magazine’s cultural significance.

More than a launch, it was a declaration. The debut sparked national conversation, elevated SB19’s growing international presence, and paid tribute to Regine’s enduring influence. It established Billboard Philippines not just as a publication, but as a platform shaping how Filipino music is seen, heard, and remembered.

In a country where music serves as both heritage and lifeblood, Billboard Philippines offers a stage for artists to claim visibility, relevance, and recognition on the global stage.

Meet the Chief of Editorial Content

Bret Jackson, Chief of Editorial Content

Under Bret Jackson’s leadership as Chief of Editorial Content, Billboard Philippines continues to solidify its position as a credible force in the local music industry. His editorial approach prioritizes impartiality and inclusivity, ensuring that artists from all genres and backgrounds are represented with integrity.

He has shaped the brand’s cultural presence through landmark moments, including its high-profile launch featuring SB19 and Regine Velasquez, and has expanded its reach through dynamic media platforms—Soundwave, Studios, and Volumes—establishing Billboard Philippines as a multi-format authority on OPM.

Power Forward

The Billboard Philippines Power Issue marked a defining moment for the local music industry—an issue created to spotlight the executives, visionaries, and cultural architects driving OPM into its next era. At its heart was a clear editorial purpose: to recognize the individuals shaping not only the sound but the systems that sustain and propel Filipino music.

For its groundbreaking cover, Roxy A. Liquigan of ABS-CBN Music joins Annette Gozon-Valdes of GMA Music, serving as a striking symbol of progress. Once seen on opposing sides of the media landscape, the two stood together in a rare show of unity—underscoring a shift toward collaboration over competition.

More than a statement, the Power Issue reflects a deeper belief: that the future of OPM depends on shared leadership, bold thinking, and a willingness to build bridges. By honoring the power players behind the scenes, Billboard Philippines continues its commitment to fostering a more connected, forward-moving music industry.
